SAINT GEORGE FINE WINES
Some people will tell you Jordan is not a wine country, but Saint George Wines are here to prove them wrong !
The very same people forget that Nabateans, natives of Jordan, grew vineyards and loved wine. During banquets organized in honor of their beloved relatives who have passed on, they drank wine. The tradition was lost and Lebanon became the Levant reference for wine.
Bulos Zumot and his son Omar Zumot were toying with the idea of starting a quality wine production in Jordan for long. However, there was no base to begin with, so they had to decide where to start their vineyards and wich varietals to import. While it only started 14 years ago, Zumot Wines have already been awarded medals at an international level (1 silver medal in 2009 and 2 silver medals in 2010 at the Vinalies Internationales – the International Wine Competition organized by the French Winemakers Union in Paris.) Zumot was the first Jordanian company to apply to this competition. Zumot Wines also won 2 bronze medals at the Japan Wine Challenge in Tokyo 2009. Before that, Jordan had never appeared in an international wine contest.
Omar Zumot, the winemaker, always had the strong conviction that Jordanian soil could produce good wine for he trusts Jordan’s nature with its dry climate, hilly countryside of the North, and temperature changes between day and night. The Saint George Wines were also granted the Organic Wine Grape Certification last year by IMO, Swiss organisation certifying organic plantation all over the world. With Saint George Wines, nature plays a central rôle ; wasps are insecticide, the fish bring the nitrate, the sheep are pruning. Add the sun and the windy weather ant it gives you mineral, clear wines : A true taste of Jordan !
